Livin' a totally different life

I know it's been awhile since my last blog post, but that's because literally everything has changed with regards to my daily routine/goals for the year/job situation.

Oh man! Where to start... Well, if some of you didn't know, I ended up flying to New Zealand on March 3rd on literally 2 days notice, and it was definitely one of the best vacations I've ever had! I would go into more detail, but Ally has an entire blog dedicated to travelling around NZL and she has gone into some pretty heavy detail regarding the South Island trip that we did only 2 days after I arrived. You can read her blog here.

The big news of this post, however, is the announcement that I'm pulling out from the 2011 season of triathlon. After 8 months of attempted rest for my left leg, minimal training on the bike and none on the run, my leg has not healed. Not even a little bit. According to my sports doctor, there was no difference between the CT scan done in September and the latest. I'd say it was a difficult decision to make but it never felt like it was up to me. I feel like I've done everything that I should have in order for the injury to heal in a timely fashion, yet all the doctors I've seen are confused as to how it's possible that it hasn't healed at all.

That was one of the hardest conversations I've had to have with Noa, and she was very understanding. It's pretty hard to beat her as a coach! :)

Now, the plans for the next little while. I've also decided that I want to leave Victoria for a short time and head up island to Tofino. I'm still looking for a job, but surprisingly new postings keep popping up. Seems like there are more jobs there than in Victoria! I've been looking at hotels, surf instructing (ummm.. Dream job?) etc. and I'm still hot on the hunt. Basically, I'm looking to put myself WAY out of my comfort zone and move to a place where I know no one, don't really have an established place to live (some of the hotel jobs offer staff accommodation), and probably end up doing a job in a field that I've never had experience in. I'm super excited, but disappointed that triathlon won't be a significant part of my life for the next few months.

Some other little goals I've made for myself in the next few months:
-Surf like a madman, so I could potentially compete in the Rip Curl Stew in June (I've kinda been training for a while now... Focusing on improving every aspect of my surfing)
-Try to save as much money as possible while in Tofino so I can have a reservoir for travel + other activities
-Keep as fit as possible. I've started running a little bit, and it's going well. It seems as if cycling and possibly swimming are the only things that can affect the injury site. It's beyond odd and I can't explain it, but impact doesn't seem to affect it.

I'll post more since the prospect of being in a new city is more exciting than writing my usual posts about training, then not training etc. :)

Hopefully I'll be in Tofino when I write my next post!
